Huskers, temper the fervor a bit - have a dose of patience

I've calmed down since Saturday night - here's a quick dose of sobriety. We aren't winning the National Championship, or even likely the Big 12 championship. We'll be doing tremendously to win the North Division. This isn't quite the comeback year, kind of just the rebound year.

Yes, it is tempting to believe that Bo can cure all. And maybe he can - eventually. Patience isn't exactly a widely held virtue in the Husker Nation. We're spoiled and we know it. However, I don't think there could be much that wouldn't please Husker fans about having a defense that looks like it ate its Wheaties for breakfast. If we flip our 5-7 record from last year and show some hungry Blackshirts, I will be well satisfied for this "building block" season. Attitude and persistence can make up for lack of talent in some ways.

The lack of dignity accompanying our downfall last year was just almost beyond swallowing. I think even with the same record if each loss had come within a field goal or extra point, the atmosphere would have been different. Unhappy, yes. But more tolerant that we were on the cusp of having anywhere from a 5-7 record to a 12-0 record. Maybe fewer pitchforks and torches in that scenario.

Well, we have what we have. And we do have something very good. However, we are just going to have to get used to progress the old-fashioned way - earning it by pounding the field each week and slowly climbing out of the pit. Husker Nation, just cool your jets and enjoy the season in a way you might enjoy your mediocre but improving son or daughter in their sport of choice. They may have a way to go, but they have a lot of spunk and some great fans.
